It's so good to see you here. Lately...Hi Sue! It's so good to see you here. Lately my posts are far and few between, but I still love to write when I can. Thank you for your compliments on my post, it's true...I am much the researcher, haha! Poor Scootie had to learn how to research to do his studies. I have my father to thank for the habit. If ever we had a question, he was there researching the answers with his books of encyclopedia and dictionaries. And, now, dad would have loved to check the internet for answers...he was quick to learn new technology. I learned a lot and revisited history during the home school hours.

I looked up your "Mighty Murray", and Oh what a beautiful river! It says it is one of the world's longest navigable rivers, and as you said, many paddleboats have traveled its waters. I watched a short video of the Murray river moving along beautifully at its mouth. It looks like it is enjoyed and loved by many boaters, fishermen and campers.

I am so glad to see you Sue, thank you so much for coming by. I suppose you are heading into the spring of things, as we, hopefully, are heading into autumn and winter. I have enjoyed seeing your gardens and pond this summer. Take care, hope to see you again soon! xxoo Hugs from Texas!Suzannehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12383039383765299104noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7840444083467497053.post-52875993177927247552020-09-18T19:53:06.063-05:002020-09-18T19:53:06.063-05:00Hello Suzanne! Your year has certainly been very busy and the responsibility of home schooling your dear grandson would have been a very big one. That's a beautiful photo of Scootie and his certificates... I can imagine how proud all of you must be for him to have achieved his current level of education.
Seeing how you approach each subject with much research and skill, he's very fortunate to have you as his home-teacher as well as a loving family member. These times will have been made all the more tolerable for him as he navigates his way through his tender years.
There is certainly so much history of steamboats that you've discussed in this post. I didn't quite realise some of those dangers.
We too, in Australia, have a rich history of steamboats (on our Murray River ... "the Mighty Murray" as we call it) as just one example. Remote settlements dependent on the to and fro of people, necessary supplies, produce and animals.
Modernity has taken over, as it does but, as I'm sure you have over there, fortunately there are some beautifully restored and treasured steamboats for our younger generations to see.
Stay well Suzanne and it is so nice to make contact again xxxxxxxSue (this n that)https://www.blogger.com/profile/06391234047655434003noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7840444083467497053.post-34466823338037574842020-09-12T09:49:09.132-05:002020-09-12T09:49:09.132-05:00Hi Shady!

I had planned to post this morning, but after a few tiring proofreads, I decided to post last night before going to bed. Like you I have only ridden in row boats, ski boats and fishing boats. I am fascinated by the steamboat era, and there were plenty out there, more than I knew of. I've only seen parts of the Mississippi while riding Amtrak from Kansas City to St. Louis, MO one year, and going through Memphis and Kentucky in the past few years. I get excited to see these rivers, such as the Red River and the Kaw (Kansas River).

I have never eaten a hoe-cake, or Johnny cake either. I've read parts of the book written by Andrew Beahrs called "Twain's Feast". He accounts some of Twain's travels abroad, and the foods he eats along the way. I've had the book for about 6 years, and haven't finished it, but have picked it up again to browse. It is a very great account of how some of the food was acquired, along with oysters, and other treats during Twain's travel. What sticks with me most, is that Twain dearly loved American food the most...he would quickly tire of European foods and coffee.

So, Shady, I am glad you enjoyed my post. Steamboats were a fairly dangerous form of transportation. Sometimes the boilers would explode when too much pressure was built up, and they were noted to be fast through rough waters, but not good on ice!

Thank you so much for coming by dear friend. I love your great comments and interest in the steamboat era. Scootie is still trying to adjust to school, but I think he can do it. He is growing up now too fast! Have a wonderful weekend, Shady! Take care! It was a pleasant surprise to log on...Hi, Suzanne!

It was a pleasant surprise to log on this morning and find a new post from your KardKornerKrib site atop my reading list. Although I have only ever taken rides on rowboats, ferry boats and sailboats, 19th century steamboats and riverboats like the ones in your article have always fascinated me. I enjoyed learning about a few of the most famous ones, their roles in history and their unfortunate demise by ice jam, fires and explosions. With little regulation and few safety features in place during those boom years, I can imagine that mishaps, injuries and deaths were common. I also enjoyed learning about Mark Twain's love of the river, his work on the boats and his travels on the Ohio and the Mighty Mississip. I enjoyed listening to "Down The River," one of Twain's favorite songs. I needed to look up the word "hoecake." I learned that a hoecake is an "unleavened cake made with flour or corn meal." It was "originally baked on a hoe but now usually cooked on a griddle." Further research revealed the following: "The term hoecake is first attested in 1745, and the term is used by American writers such as Joel Barlow and Washington Irving. The origin of the name is the method of preparation: they were cooked on a type of iron pan called a hoe." This info is all new to me.

Imagine the pioneers navigating the Ohio River as a gateway to the West. Imagine how much fun it was to ride the Island Queen from Cincinnati and Coney Island. It's interesting that the boat was used as a tramp steamer in the off season. I also like the The City of Cincinnati's "Meet the Boat" trip idea in which steamboat passengers traveled to the halfway point of their journey and then boarded a different vessel for the return trip. Thanks for that interesting essay on riverboats and steamers, dear friend!

That is an excellent picture of Scootie! I know you have had a challenging year home schooling him and prepping him for the next grade level. I admire and applaud you for your tireless efforts and I congratulate Scootie for entering 6th grade. I wish him a safe, healthy, happy and productive school year no matter what form it takes. Humans have the capacity to adjust and that capacity is surely being tested this year.

Thank you again for the educational article, pictures and song video along with the latest on Scootie. Have a restful weekend, dear friend Suzanne. I hope to see you next week over at Shady's Place!Shady Del Knighthttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07887100141814372022noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7840444083467497053.post-34958054980358973012019-12-01T13:01:33.940-06:002019-12-01T13:01:33.940-06:00Hi Sue, and Happy December! The year has gone by ...Hi Sue, and Happy December! The year has gone by too fast! I, too, wondered if you celebrate Thanksgiving in Australia. And, as you say,the concept of being thankful for all we are blessed with, is in our hearts daily. Scootie and I were able to spend Thanksgiving Day with my husband's Karo's family. They live in another town so we don't get to see them often. It was a very good day, and I was happy to see them.

I cook cinnamon on my stove in the winter, it makes me feel warm. Also, this year I tried a few lemon slices, fresh rosemary, and a few drops of vanilla extract in my little pan. I got that idea from the internet, and it smells very fresh and good. I love the smell of rosemary, and have a bush of it outside.

Thank you so much for stopping by, Sue. I missed your "Wrapping up November" post, but I am jumping over to see your goodies for December. I'm guessing you are having warm weather right about now, and we have cooled down a bit over here. Have a wonderful week, dear friend! It always brings a smile and thank you for being such a beautiful blog-friend xx
Such an adorable video of Scootie singing his ABCs! What a precious moment.
Lovely to read you were able to have a nice catch-up with family over the holiday.
Cheers to you and yours and all the very best. Scootie and I traveled to Karo's brother's and family's home in Paradise, Texas for the day, and made it back home a little while ago safely. I have a trusty new GPS to help me maneuver the country roads. It was very good to see them, as Scootie was sick last year and we stayed home.

I love aromatherapy. I have seen the little misting machines, but haven't bought one. I especially like rosemary, thyme and lemon scents. But, most of the time I will put a few cinnamon sticks in my little pan with water and let it seep on the stove.

We had drizzly cool weather today, but I hope to start a little decorating for Christmas before week's end. I don't usually start so early, but I think Shawn can help me put some stuff out. We've seen a few nicely decorated homes already!

I hope you and Mrs. Shady made it home safely and can get some rest...I feel some very busy holidays coming on, ugh! And, I think 2020 will prove to be vehlly intelesting! Haha!

Thank you again, dear friend and Birthday boy for your sweet comment and for taking the time to stop by! It's great to see this blog come to life in time for the holidays!

I believe in aromatherapy, and I will be sure to mention your cinnamon pot to Mrs. Shady. (I think I smelled it when I went out for a walk yesterday. :) A year ago when Mrs. S went with me to an eye exam (I couldn't drive home because my pupils were dilated) the doctor's office had such a wonderful fragrance that I was compelled to ask the receptionist what it was. She pointed to a plug-in air freshener with some kind of cherry scent that I absolutely loved. It put me in a great mood. Unfortunately, when I asked Mrs. Shady if we could get it for our home, she said "no" because it gave her a headache. Oh well. :)

I am a little surprised that I haven't seen any Christmas lights on houses yet this year. I'm sure they will come on today or tomorrow. The Christmas commercials have been running on TV ever since Halloween ended.

"This is a New Year,
A new beginning.
And, things will change."
~Taylor Swift

I surely hope they do!

That certainly was a sweet memory captured on video when Scootie was learning his ABCs in 2013. I'm sure he is thankful for all the time and attention you have given him over the years, all you have taught him and the fine example you have set. I am inspired by the Grandma Moses quote. Satisfaction comes at the end of a good day's work, and blessed are they who can view the end of their lives as such.

Thank you very much for the mention and birthday greeting, dear Suzanne. Now that the calendar says I am 70, I am more determined than ever to keep a mental age of 17 (possibly even 7) and to eat right and exercise even harder in an effort to stay fit and trim. Life doesn't get any easier. We need go get tougher.

This week I am in another city with family for the holidays and using a borrowed laptop. Last evening Mrs. Shady and I hosted a dinner for ten family members. This morning we will hit the road again and travel to Mrs. Shady's daughter's house in yet another part of the state. We will have dinner with them and return home this evening.

God bless Scootie displaying his colorful turkey drawing. It looks like the NBC peacock! :)

As the 20-teens come to an end and 2020 nears, I want you to know (as I am sure you do) how thankful I am to have you as a great and faithful friend most of the past decade. I wish many bessings for you and Scootie in the 2020s, and I wish you a safe and happy Thanksgiving 2019, dear friend Suzanne! I didn't know that about taking a chunk out of the top of a pencil to write your name on it. That's a fun idea.

Like you, I don't pay attention to the news constantly, I just pick up pieces along the way. It is so sad to see animals suffering for the selfishness and carelessness of humans, and, I too, have to turn my head. I especially ignore the political sarcasms, and I am glad I can't offer arguments over issues! If I know something, I keep it to myself, haha!

Norah Jones is so lovely and dreamy as you say. I like to watch her as she sings and plays piano. And, I know there are plenty of pecans to go around, I don't know how those squirrels got so many. I can't reach them, but I'll have to get a pecan shaker that reaches upwards and grabs the branches to shake. I just want enough for a few pies!

Thank you so much for coming by Sue, and for your sweet comments. I enjoy your paintings and your gardens. Take care, and hugs to you! ♥ xx Suzannehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12383039383765299104noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7840444083467497053.post-74715681052213939352019-07-29T18:15:05.877-05:002019-07-29T18:15:05.877-05:00Dear Suzanne, how uplifting to read your beautiful...Dear Suzanne, how uplifting to read your beautiful post of goodwill and hope for the coming seasons.
It may be a 'head in the sand' reaction but, sometimes to days, I don't look at The News. I turn to my painting or blogging - I like that as an alternative.
Your photos of Scootie are beautiful. Yes, I too remember the thrill of getting school items together. Paper covers to be put on each book and a little chunk of wood taken out at the top of each pencil so that my name could be written on it! More modern methods once our children came along of course but ... back in the day.
Thank you for that beautiful video at the start of your blog and also of Norah Jones. I have a CD of her gorgeous dreamy songs, she has the sweetest voice doesn't she.
Take care and enjoy the coming months. I hope the squirrels leave enough pecans for you this year ;D) Looking at your photos, there's surely plenty for all.
Cheerio and big hugs 💖 xx Sue (this n that)https://www.blogger.com/profile/06391234047655434003noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7840444083467497053.post-1518630322654325602019-07-29T10:56:07.659-05:002019-07-29T10:56:07.659-05:00Hi Shady! I think we're in for a stifling one...Hi Shady! I think we're in for a stifling one today, at already 91 degrees! Some sort of critter hit my dining room window as I typed your name. Don't know if it was a large butterfly, or a small bird. Nonetheless, it was able to recoup and move on.

I love Billy Stewart's "Summertime". Only he could pull that one off with his fun rendition! There are many recordings of this song, and all are so worthy of recognition. Norah Jones version is so nice also, with her beautiful piano accompaniment.

August has always been a special month to me, because there is so much to think about. I love the feeling of Autumn creeping in, and count the days for cooler weather. And, back to school was such a big deal! I still feel the anticipation, even after all these years! I loved looking at the new text books, and notebooks. Mom always got us a few new dresses, and shirts for my brother. We didn't go to the state fair when I was in school. It wasn't close by. But when I hit Texas, I was more aware of the State Fair and have gone a few times. I wish I was younger, I would love to take Scootie at least one time. The drive is horrendous, and parking is difficult. I would require help from a few younger adults to accompany us. Maybe he will get to go sometime later in his school years. In Texas, I believe the students are granted a "hooky" day as you were so they could go to the fair!

I agree with you Shady. If we can get through the next 10 weeks, without major interruptions from nature and hate crimes, it may be smooth sailing throughout the remainder of 2019. I will re-pledge to help keep the environment safe and clutter-free.
And, I must try to find a way to keep those pesky squirrels from getting my pecans! I don't mind sharing, but, hey!

Thank you so much for coming by Shady, and for your great and positive comments. I think there has been conflict before on which state, Florida or Texas, has the largest mosquitoes! I bet it's a toss up! Have a have a great week, dear friend! ♫

Suzannehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12383039383765299104noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7840444083467497053.post-50469276051474914432019-07-29T05:18:11.143-05:002019-07-29T05:18:11.143-05:00Hi, Suzanne!
It's been a long time since last...Hi, Suzanne!

It's been a long time since last we heard from the Kard Korner Krib lady. It's good to see a post from you, dear friend!

I like your concept of designating the month of August as a time to make resolutions, changes and adjustments and to formulate plans for the next twelve month period.

It's great to see pictures of Scootie learning how to swim and preparing for a new year of school. Like you, I have memories of school starting just after Labor Day. The first or second week was always pleasantly interrupted by Student Day at the York Interstate Fair when we could play hooky without consequence and attend the annual exhibition, getting through the gate with free passes supplied by the school.

Those pecan trees of yours are beautiful, Suzanne! Surely there must be a way of preventing squirrels from stealing the yield without harming the critters or poisoning the trees and nuts. I have seen and read about products laced with fox urine or wolf urine, granules that you can sprinkle around or sprays that you can apply to keep unwanted animals off your property and out of your garden. They are available at Lowe's, Home Depot and Western feed stores.

Your post is timely. Just last night I read that Florida is now threatened by the deadly EEE virus (Eastern Equine Encephalitis) carried by mosquitoes. Chicken were found to be infected in nearly Orange County which includes Orlando. Your post is also timely because there has been another mass shooting, this time at a food festival in Northern California. I have heard the experts say we only have eleven more years to enact sweeping changes to at least slow down the process of global warming before it is too late and irreversible damage is done to the planet. The situation is dire, yet our leaders are in denial, hiding their heads in the sand and hoping the problem will simply go away. Species of wildlife are being rendered extinct and few people seem to care. We used to be a caring people back when you and I were young. We have lost so much along the way.

On a brighter note, a musical note, I loved the rendition of "Summertime" played and sung by Norah Jones. It reminded me that in August of 1966 Billy Stewart's version of the old song was racing up the chart on its way to a top 10 finish at the end of the month and the first week of September.

Here in Florida we know that the months of August and September are the peak of the hurricane season. If we can make it through the next 10 weeks unscathed, we will be in good shape and able to turn our attention to Halloween, Thanksgiving and Christmas and enjoy the cooler weather of late fall and winter. August in Florida is indeed the beginning of the end... if only the very beginning.

Thank you for a very interesting post, dear friend Suzanne. I hope Scootie's school preparations are underway and going well, and I wish him a safe and productive school year. Take care and have a wonderful week!Shady Del Knighthttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07887100141814372022noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7840444083467497053.post-13762649401653118622019-05-06T04:42:19.484-05:002019-05-06T04:42:19.484-05:00Pretty! I am sure I will come away from the end of this novel with more understanding of what our grandparents did for our countries, and appreciate them even more for their efforts. I do change photos and Featured Posts on my sidebar as I psych up for interesting and fun things to write.

I didn't mean to become so involved in this book. I only purchased it by chance, as the cover and reviews brought to mind some of the events today that are of significance to our troops. I was ignorant for the most part regarding the Vietnam war, and was an 18 year old who had to work and support myself. During the years that I was 17-19, I didn't know any Vietnam soldiers personally. I didn't know that so many of the boys I grew up with were serving in that war. Of course, years later I came to know and realize what a senseless war it was. And, I know that a lot of the guys came home broken, physically and mentally. I believe there are a lot of help resources, but it takes time and caring people to find and reach out to all who are in need.

Hey, I watch Al Roker some also in the mornings. I know that when my son, Scootie, and I have driven to Kansas, Scootie always asks about Tornado Alley. Rusty always points it out as we drive through, but as you said, Shady, I believe it has been moving from it's original area. I feel bad for the folks in Alabama, and hope they are receiving good care and relief from their losses. It will take a long time to recover from this tragedy.

I am so glad you came by, Shady! Scootie is now officially on Spring Break for the upcoming week. I hope to find a few outings for us. My original plan was to head for Kansas, but I don't trust the weather conditions between here and there at this point. We had high winds and heavy rain in the wee hours of the morning...now, the sun is brightly shining.

Thank you for your kind comment, Shady. Take care, dear friend and have a very nice weekend!Suzannehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12383039383765299104noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7840444083467497053.post-86276823397460424902019-03-08T21:16:57.874-06:002019-03-08T21:16:57.874-06:00Hi there Suzanne, so lovely to see you back.
I ...Hi there Suzanne, so lovely to see you back.

I really appreciated reading your thoughts on this book and also sharing your Mum's experience. So many fine people, of all races and gender are affected by war and many from such a young age.
As you say, women took on many important roles in times of conflict and then, once the conflict was over, they were the ones who returned to the roles of homemaker and nurturers while still recovering themselves from all the horrors of war.
It would be a beautiful world if our countries truly did provide for every single one of our veterans, unfortunately, statistics show us that is not the case.

The weather and its changing patterns is certainly causing so much devastation isn't it. Serious subjects aren't they, but that's life today.

It was lovely to see your sweet little grandson in that photo - he can really put smiles on faces.

All the best, Happy Women's Day to you too and have an enjoyable weekend xx

Sue (this n that)https://www.blogger.com/profile/06391234047655434003noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7840444083467497053.post-62257060035766059342019-03-08T20:11:49.774-06:002019-03-08T20:11:49.774-06:00Hi, Suzanne!
It's wonderful to see you postin...Hi, Suzanne!

It's wonderful to see you posting on your KardKornerKrib site again, dear friend! Thank you for telling us about that passage from the historical fiction novel you are reading. Clearly it is a gripping read based on actual events and acts of heroism that unfolded amidst the horror of wartime. It is important to remember not only the brave servicemen, but also the many dedicated women who summoned courage unknown and lent their talents to the war effort. It saddened me to read about the indigent special needs children and those of color left behind during evacuation because they were deemed less likely to succeed academically. When the bombed out school ceased to operate, Mary and Hilda found a way to serve. Thank you for sharing details of your family members' military service. I personally thank them. It is important for us to give a respectful welcome home to all who served. The transition is often difficult. We are doing them and our country a disservice if we fail to honor them and help them make the adjustment back into civilian life.

Regarding the loss of life in Alabama from the recent twisters, I watched meteorologist Al Roker on the news shortly after the storms raked across the state spreading their devastation. He pointed out that America's "Tornado Alley" which once extended from Texas up through the midwest and mid south, has been moving eastward due to climate change. The southeast is becoming the new Tornado Alley, says Roker.

Thank you for this informative book review, dear friend Suzanne. I hope you and Scootie are doing fine and I wish you a safe and happy weekend!Shady Del Knighthttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07887100141814372022noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7840444083467497053.post-55526122855233478942019-03-08T18:55:10.360-06:002019-03-08T18:55:10.360-06:00Welcome, and thank you for stopping and leaving yo...Welcome, and thank you for stopping and leaving your kind comment!Suzannehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12383039383765299104noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7840444083467497053.post-51680029796847556722019-03-08T18:54:01.476-06:002019-03-08T18:54:01.476-06:00Welcome, and thank you for your kind comment! I came across many pictures of the rainforest in Australia and the beautiful waterfalls! What a wonderful visit that would be. And, I learned a lot which is a great thing! I never imagined there would be such a variety of animals, all working to survive in the same environment!

Thank you so much for coming by, Sue. I have missed you and am happy to see you back and painting some more. I suppose your summer is coming to an end, and you will have cool weather soon. We are having warmer temperatures and will have 90 degree weather for this next week! By the way, Happy Mother's Day dear friend. Take care and thank you for your wonderful comments! Your thinking 'outside' the box is very clever with all the plants coming right up high like that... a wonderful effect.
The rainforest is a fascinating subject indeed. I always loved those documentaries where videos are taken from the canopies looking down to the ground. It has its own special smell too. I have very happy memories of our trip up to far north of Australia and walking through the rainforest there. The bright flowers that pop out when least expected are wonderful as well.
Lovely to catch up and see what you've been up to. Thanks for your great post :D) Hugs xxSue (this n that)https://www.blogger.com/profile/06391234047655434003noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7840444083467497053.post-78929846952358553512018-04-27T14:40:21.986-05:002018-04-27T14:40:21.986-05:00Hi Shady. The movement of the plants from the rain intrigues me! I brought some blue Iris in from my yard with light raindrops on them yesterday. The raindrops always make the fragrance stand out on Iris!

I think I enjoyed the rainforest project more than Scootie did, because I learned so much from it. And, I am a firm believer that you are never too old to learn something-of course, you need to have an interest in the subject. I had no idea there were so many different kinds of animals, including butterflies that inhabit the rainforest. And, there are several species of monkies and plenty of birds! I couldn't find a Toucan for our project, but came across a Pelican and stuck him on top, lol!

Thank you so much for coming by, Shady! I appreciate your kind comments and compliments on our project! Thank you also, for sharing your dinosaur project with me. We can always look back and smile on those projects that our parents helped us with when we were younger! My parents were always hands on when we needed help with a school project!

Have a safe and happy weekend, Shady! Thank you again for checking in to the KardKorner!
