The Most Useful Two-Letter Word Ever!

There is a two-letter word that perhaps has more meanings than any other two-letter word, and that is UP!

It's easy to understand UP, meaning toward the sky or at the top of the list, but, when we awaken in the morning, why do we wake UP?

* At a meeting, why does a topic come UP?  Why do we speak UP, and why are the officers UP for election and why is it UP to the secretary to write UP a report?

* We call UP our friends.
And, we use it to brighten UP a room, polish UP the silver; we warm UP the leftovers and clean UP the kitchen.  We lock UP the house, and some guys fix UP the old car.
At other times the little word has real special meaning.
* People stir UP trouble, work UP an appetite, and think UP excuses.
* To be dressed is one thing, but to be dressed UP is special.
* A drain must be opened UP because it is stopped UP.
* We open UP a store in the morning, but we close it UP at night.

* We seem to be pretty mixed UP about UP!
To be knowledgeable about the proper uses of UP, look the word UP in the dictionary.
In a desk-sized dictionary, it takes UP almost 1/4 of the page and can add
UP to about thirty definitions!
* If you are UP to it, you might try building UP a list of the many ways
UP is used.
* It will take UP a lot of your time, but, if you don't give UP,
you may wind UP with a hundred or more.
* When it threatens to rain, we say it is clouding UP.
* When the sun comes out, we say it is clearing UP.

** When it rains, it wets the earth and often messes things UP!
**  When it doesn't rain for a while, things dry UP!

Okay...OK!  One could go on and on, but I'll wrap it UP!
...for now my time is UP, so it's time to shut UP!
And, now it's UP to you what you do with this little ditty!

Now wasn't that fun!  This fine piece of literary work was sent to us girls in my office via email from our boss Paige.  Sometimes on Fridays she sends us a fun email and wishes us a great weekend-Paige is the greatest by far!  Thanks Paige!

* I want to send a fond hello to my good friend and co-worker Cindy, who suffered a heart attack a few weeks ago.  Cindy actually drove herself to the hospital...what stamina!  We are all so happy she is doing well, and is back to work!

* And, a big Thank You to our fun friend and co-worker Paulette, who, jumped in there and worked hard to help get us through the following two weeks that Cindy was out of the office.

*** I know I haven't been here in a while...you're right, Shady-I'm having computer problems again.  And, I am typing this post from Karo's old e-machine PC! I guess I'd better get off my, well, you know, and take my laptop and desk PC to the doc.  They're slow, and with junk flying around all over the screens!
*** And, this summer has been hectic for us!  But, I've tried to keep up with my blog reading...I know you're still out there, I'm just running a bit behind.  And, looking forward to some cool temps in Fort Worth!

***
I guess you all know what an oldies music fan I am.  I listen to the oldies radio stations in the Dallas/Fort Worth area.  Well, the other day, the DJs on my station mentioned the Beatles Sgt Pepper album.  It seems as though right around the time that album was released in June of 1967, the Beatles (all of them) were in attendance at a Jimi Hendrix concert at the Saville Theatre in Shaftesbury Avenue in London...lo, and behold, Hendrix breaks out with his rendition of Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band on guitar, and actually sings the song! You can find it on YouTube if you wish to listen to it.
Jimi's version was partially played on my radio station, and I liked it!
Paul McCartney was very impressed...he said that was the best Jimi Hendrix song he had heard, lol!
 Of course!
Above, here are The Beatles at this very concert!

...and here they are holding their Sgt Pepper album cover!
This is so cool!

Thank you so much for coming by...it's always great to see you, and, as Cindy says,
"It's Great To Be Seen!"

* Please stop and say hello, drop me a line anytime!  Have a wonderful week, my dearest readers...right now we're running at about 72° here in the Lone Star State, (well, Fort Worth anyway!)
And, I love it!

Thanks Yahoo and Google,
Thanks Karo for the use of your old E-Machine (it was great!)
Thanks Shady Del Knight for dedicating the 'Sorry Suzanne"
song to me by 'The Hollies' on your blog!
Thanks to your beautiful country, Thisisme (Diane)...
...for sharing the Beatles with us!
Thank you Jodi Dean and the morning team at KLUV/Dallas, Ft. Worth

And, now,  I bid you adieu my gracious readers!

  1. Hi, dear Suzanne! That was a very interesting essay about the overused word "up." I never realized it is used so liberally in our daily communications. Wus-UP with that? :) It reminds me of the title of one of my favorite girl group songs "Mixed-up, Shook Up Girl."

That's iteresting about Jimi Hendrix covering the Beatles famous song. I went to You Tube and check him out in one of those live performances. How well I remember buying my copy of the Sgt. Pepper album and opening it to that beautiful full color photograph inside. I used to play that album to death in my college dorm room my freshman year at Penn State. I took a Mass Media class in the fall of 1967 and the professor had us study and dissect all the songs on the Sgt. Pepper album for a grade. My mother almost pulled me out of college when she found out I was studying modern rock music instead of classical.

I wish your friend Cindy a speedy and complete recovery. The same goes for your Karo. I'm still thinking about him and hope the worst is behind him.

72 degrees in your vicinity in the late afternoon! That's a vast improvement. It's still pushing 90 here although the humidity has dropped off a little. I think we finally have summer on the run!

I'm so pleased that you enjoyed the "Sorry Suzenne" video I posted in your honor. I also thank you for the love and friendship that I always feel when I come here or when you come to my blog. Many of us have been dealing with problems and challenges lately but it really helps knowing we have friends who care. As Thisisme always says, "Onward and upward." There's that "up" word again! I wish you and Karo and Scootie a safe, health and happy week ahead!

    1. Hi Shady! What a fresh coolish/warm day it has been. Karo is feeling some better, but he seems to have flu symptoms. He's going to try to get to the doctor this week.

Yessir, that Sgt Pepper Album was really something. I think we all had one, whether we liked it or not. The graphics and colors were amazing on that cover as you said. Your poor mother...what is my child studying? In the end, she was proud though!

I was surprised by the 'Sorry Suzanne' song. I couldn't imagine what it would sound like...pretty good....pre-e-t-t-y good! The Hollies and The Kinks did have some good songs!

I'm so glad you made it over, even in the sultry 90° you're having. I know we'll get some more of that too...autumn is just teasing us right now. And, Thisisme will be onward and upward with her fireplace real soon! I am enjoying the friendships I share with you and my blogmates! Thank you for your nice comments and encouraging thoughts! Have a safe and cool week, Shady! ♫

  2. Hallo Suzanne. Lovely to see you here today! I saw on Shady's blog that you have been busy, with having Scootie and then Karo not being so well. I really do hope that he is on the mend now. Ha! Yes, my little old woodburner has been fired UP a couple of times in the last month, and then, hey presto, the weather was on the way UP again, and it's been boiling hot. (Well, boiling hot to us here in deepest Devon. It would probably be chilly to you and Shadykins. LOL!!). Really good tale of the word UP. It certainly is used a lot, isn't it?! I wonder if someone has written a tale about the word LOW?! Even Bugs Bunny says Whats UP Doc?! Yes, I listened to Sorry Suzanne - I have always loved that Hollies song. Well dear friend, you gave us ELVIS, so the least we could do was give you the Beatles!! Hope you are keeping well yourself my friend. Take care, and be good! Onwards and Upwards!

    1. Hey Thisisme. Yes, it's been kind of hectic lately. Poor Karo is not feeling well lately, but, is trying to take it easy. I think sometimes we overdo, thinking we're 29 again, lol! And, Scootie keeps us hopping, but we spend all the time we can with him.

So, you've got summer back, yeah, 80° is about the hottest I want it to be. We are to be up in the 80's this week, I think we're just being teased into thinking autumn is here! We'll have to scout around and see if we can find an essay on the word 'low'. I think "What's UP Doc?" is the classic UP phrase! I had never heard that Hollies song before, it must have been on one of their albums. And, we are so blessed to have had Elvis and the Beatles aren't we? They will always be icons!

Thanks for coming by Thisisme. I have one computer in the hospital right now, and, this old thing, takes forever to call up facebook, so, I'll have to bow out of it for a day or two. I'm loving the cooler weather, and pushing Karo towards feeling better...Onwards and Upwards! Hugs! ♥

    1. Hi Nancy! The balloon man is a cute picture...I believe it is vintage. Well, the hub is a little better. He has run fever on and off for a week, with flu-like symptoms, but it seems to be subsiding now. Thanks for coming by and saying hello, and for your good wishes. Yes, still hot here, but trying to cool down some. Have a great week! ♥
