Left, Right...? Right? Left, Left, Left, Left!

Soooo...here we are in the middle of August,  just about two weeks away from the first day of school!  Hope I'm finding you all in good health, and, in good spirits!

***
What is my subject for the day?  RIGHT YOU ARE!
TODAY IS 'LEFT-HANDERS' DAY, and, I'm here to see that it is properly executed!

And, that means:

1) NO right-handers in the salad bar line!

2)  Hinge the cabinet doors, and, refrigerator doors from the left side of the unit, to be opened from
the left, thus allowing us to reach in from the right or center of the door!

3)  Place the pouring spout on the right side of  ladles and measuring cups to be used with a left hand!  Otherwise we have to pour from the straight side, making a mess!

5)  Lefties don't have to peel potatoes today!

6)  And, Righties...when using a lefthander's mouse, PLEASE return it to the left of the computer!

These are just a few items that befall us lefties.  And, here are a few former US Presidents who were lefthanded.  I believe there were only 7 or 8.

~our 31st President, Herbert Hoover

~our 38th President, Gerald Ford

~our 33rd President, Harry S Truman

~ our 42nd President, Bill Clinton

~our 43rd President, George H.W. Bush

*** Now, wasn't that fun and interesting?  It seems as though some of the lefthanded claims of Presidents have been disputed.  It's possible that Harry S. Truman and Herbert Hoover were originally lefthanded, and, at some point in time, they converted to being righthanded, or ambidextrous Presidents.  I know that in the earlier years during the 1920's and on into the early to mid 1960's, being a lefthander was not always acceptable.  Lefthandedness (is that a word?) was discouraged and, converting over to the righthand was encouraged!

Often times us lefties were placed at the end of a table so not to bump arms with the other diners!  Hey, I loved sitting at the head of our table-more elbow room! LOL!  And, I got to sit next to my Grandpa when we had dinner at their house...he was lefthanded too!  So, actually, there are some perks to being lefthanded.
AND...if you pick up a box cutter with your left hand, people just back up and stay out of your way, while you attempt to open a taped up box!  What fun it is for a lefthand parent to teach a righthanded child how to tie shoes!  I had my son so confused about the direction of the loops that he had to wear shoes with velcro   for a few years, until he learned how to tie them RIGHT!

I guess we've all heard the old worn out sayings...us lefties have said often enough!
"I'm a lefthander, living in a righthanded world!"
"The right side of the brain controls the left side of the body,
so only left-handed people are in their right minds!"

I don't use those colloquialisms to justify my being in the minority of only about 17% of the population being left-handed!  I just grin and bear it!

Thanks so much for coming by!  I truly enjoy your visits, right-handed or left-handed, I don't care!  Just say hello if you get the chance...don't be shy-that's my job!  And, come by any time you want!

As usual I want to thank:

  1. Hope you had a few people to celebrate with as lefties yesterday. And you did not mention leftist politicos!

Hope your garden is growing well!

    1. Hi Nancy. There are a few lefties in my office, and, we all have certain little quirks! I have to wear my watch on my right hand too! So, I was in pretty good company, and I'm glad to see you here.

It's not as hot this summer as the last two, but we do have watering restrictions. I did lose some things, but, I have move some of the potted plants into a shady area, and they are doing well...my geraniums are doing very well, I think of you every morning when I pass them off of my porch! I have enjoyed your photos of your gardens very much, and, oh my gosh, your fishing escapades look so fun! I hope you and your family are doing well this summer. Thank you so much for stopping by, and have a wonderful weekend!

  2. Right...uh...I mean LEFT you are, Suzanne! I can't remember if you ran a piece like this other years or if you and I ever discussed this before, but I am also left handed. No wonder you and I are always in sync! :) I can relate to all the left hander's problems you listed and there are countless more examples of how lefties have a hard time functioning in a world designed for right handers. Refrigerator doors, cabinet doors and gadgets of all types are not user friendly if you happen to be left handed. One of the worst problems in school was dragging my hand through fresh ink on the paper. It was frustrating to find a series of ugly smudges where words were supposed to be. My first grade teacher used to try to break me of my bad habit by smacking my left hand with a ruler when she spotted me writing with it! I nearly got a complex from being shamed so often for being different.

I agree, however, that being left handed is cool. That explains you and it explains Shady. :)

It's nice to see a post from you, dear friend Suzanne, and it's good to be back home in COOL Florida. How can I say that after complaining about the heat so often? If you are enduring triple digit temperatures in Fort Worth just wail until you find out how hot it was on the next leg of my journey west. I hope to see you over at SDMM this Sunday. Until then, please take good care of yourself, Karo and Scootie Potter!

    1. I thought you mentioned being left-handed Shady! I did write a piece for another site I used to write on a couple of years ago. But, I was afraid of offending someone, so I didn't put it on blog, and I actually took it off of the other site and closed that account down. It was not a rewarding experience at all, a waste of my time!

I do remember the smudges on the side of the palm very well, and, me too, also in first grade, they tried to sway me to the right, and, eventually gave up! "Just put her at the end of the table!" It is funny to me now-no one would dare try to change a left-handed kid, other than the parents maybe.

So, I feel pretty good about describing the perils of lefties this time around, and thought I would dress it up a little with a few 'special' lefties, lol! Being left-handed can be a pain, but it can also be funny!

We will get to pick 'Scootie' up Friday nite for a few days. He will be starting Kindergarten at the end of the month, so that cuts out any lengthy visits with him now. We knew the school days would eventually come.

Thank you so much for your visit, Shady! I'm so glad you had a great vacation, and, I'll put my sweatband on for your next post, lol! See you soon!♫

  3. Hi Suzanne, well I didn't realise a lot of the problems left handers encounter. This post was such an eye opener.
I was shocked once when I read a long time ago about people being forced to use their right hand... exactly the same as if we righthanders were told to use our left hands!
I love how you thoroughly research everything and I always enjoy your writing.
All the best and thanks for sharing your thoughts, cheerio and hugs :D) xx

    1. Hello Dear Susan, and thank you for coming by. Yes, us lefties endured much harrassment in the 'old' days, (not really so bad). Well, I've been teased a lot, but, these days I see more and more lefthanders than when I was younger. We may take over, haha! Not likely. I do shift a mean 4-speed race car with my right hand though, and can keep up with the best of them! So, I guess I do have some righthandedness in me!

I really appreciate and cherish your comments, Susan, and I am so glad that you do write on your blog from time to time, so I can see what you're up to! I'm with you on keeping the dust off...we're still on the map! Have a great week, hope to see you soon! xxoo
