Veterans Day Family Tribute!

photo by suzanne * March 2011
I just stopped by to share photos of a few of the Veterans in my family.

As you all know, Veterans Day is recognized on November 11, 2011.  Armistice Day was already being observed on November 11 as a dedication to World Peace, and in 1953, Stephan Riod of Emporia, Kansas encouraged the beginning of the expansion of Armistice Day.  His desire was to celebrate ALL Veterans.  Consequently, President Dwight Eisenhower signed Veterans Day into law on May 26, 1954.

*** My Grandfather, Joseph Henry Berry, of Kansas City, Kansas, served in WWI:

The WAC(I)s were a part of the British Army.  Mom was in the Steno group doing secretarial work.  She was eventually transferred  to work for a Brigadier General.  And, later, was transferred to the recruiting office to help transfer young soldiers anxious to return home.  That's where she met my dad!

My stepfather Robert Jones served in the US Marines

  1. Lovely tribute to your family members today, Susan. They will always be remembered with pride. My granddad and my husband's granddad both died in the First World War, so we never knew them. My husband was in the Armed Forces for over 25 years, and took part in the war in Aden and, also, the Falklands. Hope your weekend goes well my friend.

  2. * Thisisme, I enjoyed your tribute to Armistice Day, also. I'm sorry you weren't able to enjoy your granddad...he must have been a good soldier, to have died for his country. I'm glad we could share each other's thoughts on this day, dear friend! Thank You!

  3. Gosh you really did a great job on your blog. Too late I thought of the poem "In Flanders Field" written during World War 1, as kids we memorized this poem, but now the only words I can remember of it is, in flanders field the poppies grow. etc...I think we celebrated this day on November 4, paper poppies were made and sold and everybody had one pinned onto them, the veterans did it here too till they changed the dates.

  4. * Hi Mom, I'm glad you enjoyed the post, and thanks for your compliment. I found the poem you're talking about, 'In Flanders Field', and emailed it to you. I remember you getting us some of the poppies to wear...don't see them anymore. Talk to you soon.
    Love, Suzanne

  8. * Nancy, thank you for the compliment on my lead photo...I staged and planned that picture just for storytelling. And I'm glad to have the old photos of my parents and Karo's. Never thought I'd be using them across the world! Thank you for coming by...have a great Thanksgiving!

    * Laura, yes, that's a pipe in Bennie's mouth...cool, huh? I love his Navy pictures-of course, I was always attracted to sailors, loved their uniforms. I knew my mom had been in the WACS, but never thought of her as a Veteran. Well, she served our US soldiers in India, although, she said she's not entitled to our Veterans' benefits.

Thanks for coming over, I know you're busy. Still think that see-thru bug is weird! Have a fun Thanksgiving...ooxx
