One Hot Day's Cool Retreat!

In an effort to escape the sweltering Texas heat, most folks opt to stay indoors.  But, inevitably, cabin fever sets in, and, pandemonium is abound!  I'm here to tell you, if your air conditioner goes out on you, it may take a few days for the Air Conditioner service to come knocking at your door with relief!  In the meantime, the nearest motels are capitalizing on your misfortune...that is, if you can even score a room during  summer vacation time on a moment's notice.  And, if you need to bring your pet, be prepared!  $50.00 minimum per night for a pet!  AAGHGH!!!

*  I guess you have figured out, that I've been through all of the above this past summer.  It did double duty on me, my patience, and my pocketbook!  But, I got through it with positive determination and a new Air Conditioning guy (hugs to you, Clarence)!

One rather hot July day, I felt I had to get out for a while, and, the grocery store just wasn't going to do it for me!  I needed something different to look at instead of tomatoes and baby back ribs!  I wanted to find an antique store to browse through, somewhere in Fort Worth.  Well, after searching the internet, I didn't have much luck finding anything that is still operating.  But, as I came across one name in a familiar area, I set out to see if I could find it.  No luck there, however, I ventured into the parking lot of a strip mall that was at one time a real hot spot with shops and cafés.  I saw a large sign atop one of the shops that read Flea Market!

* The rest is in the eyes of the beholder!

Well, you get the idea!  This was a very large, indoor Flea Market, and so well cooled.   Although I didn't find anything that I just couldn't live without, I enjoyed browsing through the multitudes of items.  They even had a kitchen where you could order burgers, or other foods that were prepared and cooked right there.  It was just what the doctor ordered for me!  New, friendly faces, and all kinds of neat stuff to look at in a very cool place!

*** So, if you're ever in a fever, and need to get out for a while, look to your nearest Flea Market for new faces and exercise.  Who knows...you may find something you just can't live without!

Here's how my little Scootie handles the heat.
"Oops, Grandma...I didn't mean to get wet!  I was just trying to move the sprinkler!

  1. Hi, Suzanne!

I'm sorry, dear friend, but that isn't a very flattering picture of you! :)

I'm also sorry to learn that your a/c petered out at the height of the cooling season. I hope your summer hot spell has ended by now. Here on the Central/S.W. coast of Florida we are currently experiencing some of the hottest days of the year. I'll bet Clarence the Air Conditioning guy could throw his hat into the ring, run for president and carry the states of Texas and Florida! :)

When I was a boy we didn't have air conditioning. Few families in our neighborhood did. When a modern, air conditioned bowling alley opened a couple of blocks from my house I was in my glory. On hot summer days I walked up to the lanes to watch people bowl, play pinball in the arcade and, mostly, to escape the heat.

Mrs. Shady and I love to visit flea markets. In our vicinity we have a traditional outdoor flea market and an indoor one. Believe it or not the outdoor flea market does more business, even in the extreme heat and humidity of spring and summer.

My aunt and uncle had a farm but they also operated a flea market on their property. For decades they drove around South and Central Pennsylvania and Northern Maryland visiting other flea markets and garage sales. They prided themselves on spotting items that could be spruced up and sold at their shop for a profit such as old, dirty or tarnished housewares. Some of their finds qualified as genuine antiques and fetched a sizable sum.

It's great to see Scootie again. Running through the sprinklers and getting squirted and soaked by the garden hose were among my favorite summertime activities in my youth.

Enjoy the rest of your week, dear friend Suzanne!

    1. Well, Shady, I hope I didn't scare you with my picture, lol! It was pretty testy with the air conditioning this summer. I had to change services mid-stream, and in the process, I have a partially ruined floor in my small hallway from water leaking from the indoor unit! But, that's okay for now, can deal with it later! What's important, I think I'll have a better relationship with the new company, AND, it's staying cool in the house! We didn't have air conditioning in Kansas when I was growing up. My dad would fix box fans for the bedroom windows to help keep us cool.

Flea markets are fun, and as the weather cools, I hope to find my way to a few of the outdoor markets in neighboring towns. You're absolutely correct in saying that some of the finds qualify as genuine antiques. And, there's something exciting about the outdoor flea markets, the dust, sweat and grime can be exhilarating...lol! Nothing like a good hot shower after an outdoor flea market!

Sprinklers are fun, and I believe every boy and girl should run through a sprinkler at least once in their life! Scootie loves it, and I don't care if his clothes get wet. I just throw a towel out and put dry clothes in the laundry room for him to change into when he comes in!

Thank you for stopping by with your fun comments, Shady! It's good to hear of your aunt and uncle's fun trips. Take care, and stay cool, dear friend!

  2. Hello, the flea market sounds like a great place to cool off and check out all the goodies at the same time. I do think your Scootie has a great way of cooling off too. We are still having some warm temps here too. In case of emergency, I am glad my son works with HVAC and can fix broken Air conditioners. Enjoy your day and the weekend ahead!

    2. We seemed to have cooled down a bit. I do not mind the warmer weather, I am not a winter person. Thanks so much for visiting my blog and for the comment. Happy Monday.
