August On My Mind!

December 31st is the time of year for new beginnings where it is customary for most to plan for the New Year.  We make resolutions and vow to change something about our lives that will make the new year better.  And then we CELEBRATE!!!

But for me, it's August.  That sultry, middle of the year, month!  And in most states, it is usually the hottest month ever.  Sometimes the state of Texas sees hotter temperatures in the month of September.  But, for me, August is the turning point for new beginnings and thoughts of transitions into a new year.

As a young girl, August was a month of anticipation.  I had to start thinking about a new school year and how I would measure up to the kids and teachers.  Of course, I was able to stay in touch with a few of my school friends during the summer, but not really on a daily basis.  In 1950's Kansas we started a new school year the day after Labor Day.  We would have enrolled for school the previous week.  Then there was a matter of new school clothes and shoes.  With 3 school aged kids in my family, our new clothes would be limited...2 or 3 dresses each for my sister and me, and 2 or 3 new shirts and pants for my brother.  And, we would each get a new pair of shoes-saddle oxfords or loafers.  So, would my plaid dresses and brown and white oxfords pass inspection of my peers or only provoke laughter?  And last, but not least, how quickly would August go by, when summer runs out of time and it's back to business again?  How soon would the earth begin to cool down and roll me into my dearly beloved autumn?

During my teen years, bringing in the 1960's, I felt much the same about August, with a few fun exceptions.  There would be some teen dances throughout the summer at the Methodist Church-guaranteed to take your mind off of summer's eminent demise.  And my parents purchased season passes for us at a local swim club, so I did get to spend some time with friends and actually meet new friends.  I started working parttime after Christmas with a work permit at the age of 14.  So I did have a little spending money and was able to "shuck" the oxfords for a "cool  fad" pair of shoes to start the new school year.  However, during a checkup with our family doctor, he asked how it was that he missed my tonsils, since he had jerked my sister's and brother's tonsils out when we were much younger.  So, out with my tonsils and goodbye fun in the sun!  I then prayed for the long, hot, dog days of summer to guide me through recovery and back to school.

In June of my 16th year, I took Driver's Ed classes at our high school.  Most of the time I had to walk about 2 miles to the school and back for the classes.  But once in a while, I would drive my Grandfather's old Plymouth that my mother had bought from my Grandmother when Grandpa passed away.  I would park it a couple of blocks behind the school and walk to my class from there.  One day my Driver's Ed instructor asked, "Well, how's the old Plymouth running these days, Miss Berry?"  I tried to act dumb, but he knew and he laughed...PHEW!  So I managed to breeze through the hot classroom studies and did receive my driver's license.  Once again, came the countdown to August's arrival and the thought of driving that OLD Plymouth to school for the first time.  And, once again, August did take me into a new life with new commitments and new celebrations!

And now, in my very adult life, I have focused on August both in the working world and in my family life.  I remember buying new school clothes and shoes for my son before he could even walk!  Sometimes I even buy myself a back to school outfit, and once I got in on a back to school sale on eyeglasses!  And, yes, I still look at school supplies, lunch boxes and book bags.  And I can always use an extra spiral notebook.  School now starts sometime in August and that really throws me.  I countdown the days before school starts in our area.  Well, since I do drive to work every day, I need to be conscious of the school buses and school zones.  And the traffic is heavier after school starts in August, so I try to leave for work a few minutes earlier in the mornings.  Now, as a Grandmother,  I think of my grandson and how I will get to help with school clothes and supplies.  He is just now 21 months old and we have already gotten crayolas and drawing paper for him.  See a pattern forming?

Oh August,  I'm counting on you to take me by the hand and dance me into the beautiful season of Fall where God's paintings are color splashes of orange, red and purple!

Well, I decided to call up my old pal "Mark Twain" and see if he has anything to say since he's been on a short break...and his reply was:

"The trouble ain't that there is too many fools, but that the lightning ain't distributed right."

I'd like to know who his English teacher was.  I mean, I copied this quote exactly as it was written!  Maybe I should research his life and education further-could be something I missed.  But nevertheless,  I love the guy!  My brother, sister and I played "Authors" and "Old Maid" card games when we were younger and I remember his picture on one of the cards-but I don't remember which card it was.  Does anyone out there know?  Drop me a line if you can shed some light on the subject.  In the meantime, I'll do some more research and be back with you.

***
By the way, the temperature today, Monday, August 2, 2010, in Texas got to 106 degrees!  We have a husky dog and my husband keeps her favorite spots watered down, and then puts a fan out to cool down the wet spots.  That poor dog-my husband rescued her about 8 years ago.  We don't know if she was lost or dumped out.  But Texas is NOT the place for a husky.  We love her and she is a good dog.  And we couldn't part with her, but we feel so bad in the summer.  It snowed this past December and she was a totally different dog.  She couldn't get enough of it.  I will have to post some pictures of her later with snow on her.

And time is nearing for a new survey.  I would like to see a better showing of hands this time around.  Come on!   There's nothing like a little trivia to keep us thinking, eh?

EEWW!!! LOOK WHAT'S INVADING OUR TOMATOES!!!

photo by Suzanne at KardKorner Headquarters
Fort Worth, Texas -July 2010

While visiting our tomato plants last week, we discovered that the tops of the plants looked like they had been snipped off with scissors.  Lo and behold!  These creatures that blend perfectly with the leaves were nesting on our plants.  If you look closely you can even see his eyes!  Blah!  A fly was harrassing one of them and it was writhing back and forth while hanging on to the plant as it tried to ward off the fly.  It's none other than the Tomato Hornworm, native of the United States!  Their eggs are deposited onto the leaves of the tomato plant by the "hawk" moth in late spring and hatch in six to eight days later.  They don't mess around!  Later, as the worm matures, it drops off the plant to the ground and then emerges into the moth to repeat the cycle.  But by early fall they will remain in the soil all winter and then emerge again as a moth in the spring.

A common, natural enemy of the hornworm is the wasp.  The wasp kills and feeds upon a large proportion of the larvae and they also attack cabbage looper and other garden caterpillars.  But the most recommended way of controlling the worm is to handpick them from infested plants.  Once tomato season is over, gardeners should be sure to till the soil up to prevent re-infestation.

Somewhere off to the right of the page should be a picture of the "Hawk" moth.

I gathered this information from a site featuring the Department of Entomology, Univ. of Minnesota

Well, I had the day off today and I watched The Today show this morning on TV.  They announced that today is "National Hammock Day".  I have never heard of it, but, hey-I can live with it.  This day is celebrated in the middle of the "Dog Days of Summer" (July 3 thru August 11).  It is not a day for work, and cutting the lawn is forbidden.  Well, that pretty much describes how our day went!"

And I decided to give my old standby, Mark Twain a break and leave you with some quotes from Movies on the subject of worms.

 * The Fox & The Hound (1981):  "A worm for breakfast?  Yuck!"
* Remington Steele (1983):  "The worms will be singing tonight!"
* The Great Outdoors (1988):  "These are the biggest worms I have ever encountered!"
* Wolf (1994):  "Is the worm turning Mr. Randall?"
"The worm has turned & it is now packing an Uzi, Mary."
* Dreamcatcher (2003):  "One worm kills the world?  Just one worm can affect the whole world?   Not just Boston?  Not Massachusetts?  Or the Northeast?"

Happy Birthday Karo!

My husband, Karo, was born on July 21st.  I won't give the year-he may not want anyone to know his age.  But he's the greatest!  Always there for me and everyone else.  We've been married for almost 10 years now, and I cannot imagine life without him.  Karo is a loving, caring father and the best Grandfather imaginable!  He's a talented musician, with a great singing voice.  He likes to work on classic cars, and he is very talented in carpentry, electricity and plumbing.  Karo sings a lot-he sings to our pets and even adds their names to his songs.  And a funny guy-makes me laugh a lot. He is my best friend and I love him very much.  He does everything for me-treats me like a queen.  I've always been one to save the best for last, and I gotta tell you, I got the BEST AT LAST!  Happy Birthday Mister!

You're All Invited To A Pool Party!!!

Welcome to the largest swimming pool in the world...just off the coast of Chile!  This pool covers 20 acres,  has a 115-foot deep end and holds 66 million gallons of water.  The water is so crystal clear, you can see the bottom even in the deep end.  The water from the sea that is just on the other side is filtered into this pool.  The seawater is so cold you can't swim in it, but they are able to regulate the temperature in this pool to 26 degrees warmer than the sea water.  How refreshing this would be after today's high of 98 degrees!!!

And now- to the results of my poll from the year 1959.  Honestly, I only had one brave soul-my coworker Cindy, attempt this harmless survey.  Here are the correct answers:

1)  Twilight Zone did premier on TV on October 2, 1959
2)  Dwight Eisenhower was elected U.S. President in 1955
3)  Richie Valens, The Big Bopper and Buddy Holly all perished on
February 3, 1959 when their small plane crashed in Clear Lake, Iowa.
4)  Gasoline was not .24 cents in 1959.  In 1959, gasoline was 30.5 cents a gallon.
5)  And yes, in 1959, Mattel's Barbie Doll is launched to the public!

Never fear...there will be more surveys!  I'll break you yet, readers!!!

I want to thank my grandson Shawn's mom, Latisa for visiting my blog.  You can view her comments from my "Rain in July" post.  Comments and ideas are welcome.

And now, how about a goodbye from my favorite Mark Twain!

Rain in July-very rare in Texas!

Photo by Suzanne from Kard Korner Headquarters
Fort Worth, Texas ~July 2010

We've had much rain this month so far.  Our rain gauge says 2 inches just this afternoon.  The sidewalk out back was totally underwater.  But look at how green our grass is!  We're pretty pleased about that.  Of course, the zinnias are laying over again.  We cut a few of them earlier while it was just sprinkling and now the temperature is down to 72 degrees!  Almost unheard of in July around here.

While you're looking around on my blog, be sure to check out my Jellyfish video.  I've been trying to get some sort of slide show with our personal pictures on here, but still no luck.  I will eventually figure it out tho.  However, the jellyfish are pretty.

~
Yesterday was my mom's Birthday.  She is officially 84 years old and proud of it, I'm sure!  I've placed a couple of pictures of her on her last Birthday on my blog today.  Actually she is standing in front of her red gazing ball.  I guess I should have picked the picture that shows all three of them.
Happy Birthday Mom!

Next, my dear readers, is the matter of my 1959 survey.  The poll closes tomorrow at around 6:30 pm I believe.  I've only had one taker.  And that brave one is my friend and co-worker Cindy.  Cindy, if you're reading, thanks so much for taking the plunge!  I will reveal the answers on tomorrow or Sunday.

Born On The Fourth Of July! A Salute to My Brother!

Today I am remembering my brother Stan who was born July 4, 1950.  My sister Leta was about 3 years old, and I was probably around 18 months old.  I guess it was out of the question for us to do fireworks that nite-I imagine my dad had his hands full with two little girls on board and mom in the hospital.  Oh well, I can guarantee we made up for it in later years.  My brother was one firecracker fan!  It was always a festive day for us.  Even though it was my brother's Birthday, I kind of felt like it was mine too.  He would line up his firecrackers, bottle rockets and smoke bombs and patiently await the good word that we could shoot off some stuff before dark.  We would have picnics outside on the patio with mom's potato salad, and once my sister got up and started moving around for the day, she would help with the baking.  She made the best peanut butter cookies with crisscross designs in them.  And there would be cake too.  Sometimes my dad would make homemade ice cream-Yum!  Anyway, of course, after dark there would be fireworks.  And we could also see the neighbors fireworks too.  Sometimes afterwards then, my parents would bring some quilts out and we could all lay out on the front lawn (which, by the way, was always nicely manicured) and we would fall asleep outside under the stars.  I thought it was a fun time of year.  My brother has passed on now, 3 years ago, but I will always remember his Birthdays and the anticipation of his favorite time of year.
God Bless You Stan!  We miss you!

Some other Birthdays we will be celebrating this month:
my Mom * July 8
my husband Karo * July 21
Karo's son Chad * July 26

It's been raining cats and dogs this afternoon and this evening.  The creek is running fast-sometimes it runs over the bridge and they close our street off.  Our Zinnias are laying over.  I'll have to go out and cut the taller ones and bring them in.  The sidewalk out back was running over and Karo had to rescue our little cat (15 years old) and put her in her house.  She's blind now and stays pretty close to the porch.  We can't bring her in-she's never liked being in the house and we worry about her more now.  I think we'll have to make a serious decision soon, although she eats real good and doesn't complain.

***
So, let's stand up and salute the 4th of July!!!  Be happy for our wonderful country.  Even though things sometimes aren't going well, be thankful for the good things-any kind of job we can get (heh!heh!), family and friends!  And, of course, our Grandchildren and Great Grandchildren!

***
And don't forget to vote on my poll-COME ON!  I've only had one participant.

In Memory of Farrah Fawcet

Farrah Fawcet
February 2, 1947-June 25, 2009

Farrah Fawcet was a natural beauty.  She came on the scene and stole all of our hearts (even though we were jealous).  We tried to at least copy her hairstyle, but no one could match her smile and charm.  She was one of the great Charlie's Angels and starred in many films. I think those girls started an exciting revolution for women who love tight jeans, like to take risks, and have big hair. I enjoyed watching her in films and was a faithful Charlie's Angel viewer.  I admired her very much, and was saddened as are all of her fans by her passing.

By the way...our grandson Shawn turns 20 months old tomorrow.  He is now building with duplo building blocks.  Ahhh, he is so full of energy!  To be 20 months old again!

And don't miss the partial lunar eclipse of the moon starting at 6:17 a.m. Saturday morning...I don't know if I can get up that early.  But the moon will pass through the earth's shadow, temporarily becoming dark.  NYAAH!  Still don't know if I can make it.  But let's try!!!  This "Moon Illusion" should give quite a show!

Remembering Michael Jackson

Michael Jackson *** August 29, 1958-June 25, 2009 ***

I was always a fan of Michael Jackson.  Like many others, I enjoyed his music and I loved watching him perform.  I never saw him live in concert, but I never missed a chance to watch a televised performance by him.  He was the cutest kid and grew into a very handsome young man.  What happened after that, I won't even speculate.  My son and I enjoyed his "Thriller" album-we wore it out!  And to name just a few of my favorites:  "Billie Jean", "I'm Bad",  and "Man in The Mirror".  I, for one, regret that his life later became troubled and sad.  And I had looked forward to his work and performing in his later years.  But I will always celebrate his life and accomplishments, because they always brought joy to my life.  We miss you Michael Jackson!

I'm assuming by now that you've noticed my new survey for 1959...please feel free to vote-I insist!!!  And you have until July 10,2010 before the polls close.

Ah, Summer!

Well, today is the first day of Summer and it's already 100 degrees here in the Lone Star state.  Got to be sure to keep plenty of fresh water on hand for the animals.  As you can see in the picture above, this squirrel is waiting in line near the water faucet for his refreshment!  He's had his fill from our Mulberry tree, and soon it will be nap time.

I hope all you Dads had a wonderful father's day.  I tried to upload a special Dad's picture but the format wasn't compatible to this program.  Well, better luck next time they say.  We had a nice, quiet Father's Day, but it was too hot to get outside so we just chilled out indoors for the day.

So, I'll close for today with a couple of my favorite summer quotes:

Celebrate Flag Day June 14, 2010!

In August 1949, President Harry S. Truman proclaimed June 14 as Flag Day, and since then all Americans
in the country are encouraged to display the Stars and Stripes outside their homes and businesses.

Old Glory was flown from sea captain William Driver's merchant ship in the 1820's/1830's.  It was originally a 24 star flag, and later 10 more stars were added for the states that had joined the union.

The Grand Union Flag is considered to be the first National Flag of the United States and was first flown on December 2, 1775 by John Paul Jones.

The Betsy Ross Flag was designed during the American Revolution.  According to the legend, the original Betsy Ross Flag was made on July 14, 1776, and in use by 1777.  Even though it is disputed that she actually sewed the first Flag, Americans have accepted Betsy Ross' story as history.

Please note-I compiled this information from About.com-Homeschooling, from an article written by Beverly Hernandez on the The History of Flag Day.

Monday, Monday...so good to me!

Happy Monday readers!  Today is "show and tell".  My mother was recently featured the "Kansas City Star" newspaper for her herbal antics Hopefully, to your right is the picture that was taken of her during an interview with Rachel C. Murphy.  The article is very lengthy and I couldn't get all of it in, but here are a few comments made by my mother:
"When starting out, it's important to start small and simple.  I grow dill, mint, parsley, fennel, a lot of cilantro, which doesn't keep, because I do a lot of Indian cooking.  If you're feeling more adventurous, branch out to herbs such as French Tarragon, Rose Geranium, Angelica, a sweet herb, or Rosemary.  Even common herbs, such as mint come in several varieties:  chocolate mint, pineapple mint, spearmint & and peppermint."  Mrs. Jones recommends getting to know your nursery for the best advice.  "No matter what you decide to grow, start small and focus on what you'll actually use."

You go Mom!  Great article!  If you have any questions for my mother on herb planting, send them my way and I'll see that she gets them.

Elvis is in the building!

Elvis appeared on the Milton Berle show on April 3 (from the deck of the aircraft carrier the USS Hancock) and on June 5, 1956.  Among his selections on his second appearance was a playfully sensuous performance of  "Hound Dog" that drove the kids in the audience wild, and the next day, has the press and some of the adult viewers appalled.  It is one of his most controversial performances.

Well, there's not much time left to express your opinions on Willie Nelson's new "do".  Sorry, I should have attached a photo for inspection.  I will post the results soon.  Be sure to vote on the "Ode to Billie Joe" poll...I think there's more time on that one-it closes next Saturday June 12th.

Is it Coffee Time Yet?

The photo above is a picture of an outdoor gate my husband, Karo built for me a few years ago. We painted it and added hardware to make it real. I added a couple of pots and some Hibiscus. I painted the leaves and vines myself.  I did utilize the help of stencils just to outline and give myself and idea of where to go with it!

I took the photo into one of my photo programs, added a spotlight and some stars, and this photo made a great backdrop for a Mother's Day card and also a Birthday card. I even took some of the other shots of this gate and made a collage-then brought window panes from my clipart over the additional views to add a more interesting cover.

We just had a horrific thunderstorm and the electricity went off for a few seconds. I lost my first writing of this so I am trying to hurry to finish it.

*** Then, I'll have a nice cup of hot java! ***

Thank you for coming by...hope to see you again soon!
